What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers, also known as facial fillers, are non-surgical cosmetic treatments that are minimally invasive and an excellent alternative to invasive procedures such as a facelift.

Facial fillers are gel-like liquids injected deep into the skin to help restore smooth lines, soften creases, and enhance facial contour. Injectable dermal fillers also restore lost volume. Over one million people undergo this skin-rejuvenating treatment annually, all aiming to look and feel more youthful.

What are Facial Fillers Made Of?

Fillers are of various types and are categorized by the contents of each substance. Injectable dermal fillers that use Hyaluronic Acid (HA) help hydrate the skin and make it plump. HA fillers are gel-like, and the results last for six to twelve months.

Another type of injectable facial filler is calcium hydroxyapatite, a naturally occurring substance found in our bones. The CAHA filler is thicker than the hyaluronic acid filler and is also more consistent and long-lasting. Calcium hydroxyapatite fillers help stimulate collagen production in the body and last for up to twelve months.

Injectable fillers also use the Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) filler for treatment. PMMA is a synthetic substance that takes the form of a microsphere and remains in the skin for a long time.

JUVÉDERM products

This dermal filler helps replace lost facial volume, restoring a younger, smoother complexion. It’s made with hyaluronic acid, a substance found in the skin that gives it volume and elasticity. When injected into facial wrinkles, it erases them to provide a natural, radiant look.

 

  • JUVÉDERM Ultra®: This product is good for general facial maintenance. It comes in a range of thicknesses and can be used to fill mild to moderate lines and wrinkles. It is also a great all-rounder, enhancing the lips and sculpting the face.
  • JUVÉDERM Voluma®: Voluma® can help combat facial volume loss. This filler has a lightweight formula with larger particles that easily pass through the skin and bind to the tissue underneath.
  • JUVÉDERM Vollure™: Containing hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance, Vollure™ is specifically designed to diminish wrinkles in the lower half of the face. Laugh lines, nasal labial folds, marionette lines, and oral commissures can all be addressed with Vollure™.
  • JUVÉDERM Volbella®: Exclusively designed for the treatment of thin lips and vertical lip

Restylane® Products 

Ideal for plumping the face and reducing the appearance of moderate to severe wrinkles, Restylane® creates natural-looking results in the cheeks, lips, and other areas of the face. Our office offers Restylane® Lyft, Restylane® Silk, and Restylane® Refyne and Defyne for your convenience.

 

  • Restylane® Lyft: Lyft is most commonly used on patients who wish to fill deeper facial wrinkles and sunken cheeks. It can also shape the lips, cheeks, and chin. 
  • Restylane® Silk: Silk is used exclusively to improve the appearance of moderate to deep wrinkles in the nose and lip area and the overall appearance of the lips.
  • Restylane® Refyne: Refyne is the only filler on the market that allows movement and natural expression. It uses specially formulated hyaluronic acid combined with a dermal filler made with XpresHAn Technology™ to improve fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Restylane® Defyne: The newest Restylane filler, Defyne smooths out pesky nasolabial folds (from nose to mouth) and marionette lines (from mouth to chin) that come with age as our skin loses elasticity. Defyne aims to reduce wrinkles while maintaining a natural appearance.
  • Restylane Contour: Restylane Contour is formulated with XpresHAn Technology™, which allows the gel to move naturally with your facial expressions. This makes it perfect for restoring lost volume in the cheeks and creating a soft, natural look. As a cheek filler, it enhances the face without appearing overly stiff or artificial, making it ideal for patients seeking natural cheek augmentation.

Radiesse

Radiesse is a biocompatible, non-toxic, and non-allergenic filler, and patients who undergo this treatment often see up to 80% improvement in just one week. The filler is injected under the skin at the treatment site(s) and can be completed in as little as 15 minutes after your initial consultation. Though patients are advised to avoid sun exposure, they may resume normal activity immediately after their appointment. 

Some patients may experience minimal bruising and/or swelling for up to 36 hours after Radiesse treatment.

VERSA

 REVANESSE VERSA is a relatively new multi-purpose dermal filler that can be used to improve the appearance of facial areas such as the cheeks, nasolabial folds, and lips. Its primary active ingredient is HA; however, unlike other fillers, VERSA’s filler particles are spherical and uniform, which creates the ideal balance between volume and smoothness. Studies have also shown that swelling occurs 24% less with VERSA.

What’s the First Step?

The first step in getting dermal fillers in Huntersville and Greenville, NC, is to schedule your consultation at CAMI. When you come in, you will meet with your highly-trained injectionist, who will assess your face and discuss your aesthetic goals. You will be able to ask any questions you may have or address your concerns, as well as need to discuss your medical history and lifestyle. It is very important to be open and honest during this consultation, as it will help you achieve your aesthetic desires and prevent potential complications.

A clinician may take pictures prior to the treatments to use as a comparison. You will be able to have your treatment immediately after your consultation, but if you wish to reschedule for a different day, our patient concierge team can help you schedule your appointment.

What to Expect on the Day of a Dermal Filler Treatment

Your dermal filler treatment will be performed in the comfort of our practice. After you are comfortable in our treatment chair, the skin of your treatment area will be cleaned, and if requested, a numbing cream or cold compress can be applied to make your experience painless.

Next, your trained provider will inject exact amounts of the filler into strategic locations on your face and then gently massage the filler to spread it around evenly. They will assess the injection and only add more filler if needed.

Once the treatment is complete, we may keep you in our office for about 10 minutes to ensure you do not have any negative reactions to the filler.

Dermal Filler Recovery

There is no “recovery” per se. Most patients return to their daily routine immediately following their treatments. Any redness or slight swelling at the injection site typically resolves itself within 24 hours.

You will want to avoid touching your face, especially the treated areas, for the first 24-48 hours to prevent the filler from accidentally dispersing to other areas of your face. Depending on the filler used, you will be able to enjoy your results for many months, but since this is not a permanent treatment, you will require “maintenance” treatments to maintain your appearance.
