Prescription Medication for Hair Loss

Prescription medication for hair loss including topicals is available at CAMI. In the initial stages of hair loss, it is possible to slow the hair loss using hair loss prescription drug therapies. In Charlotte and Huntersville, NC, and the surrounding communities, Dr. Stephen Giordano, medical director at Carolina Age Management Institute, uses hair loss prescription topicals and prescription medication for hair loss to treat the early stages of male pattern baldness and other forms of hair loss.

What are Hair Loss Prescription Topicals and Prescription Medications for Hair Loss?
In the early stages of hair loss, it is possible to slow the progression and possibly even stop it. Hair loss prescription topicals and prescription medications for hair loss are non-surgical treatments prescribed by a physician that works to keep hair loss from getting worse and possibly even reverse the hair loss.

How Do Prescription Medications for Hair Loss Work?

Physicians recommend two main therapies used to treat hair loss – minoxidil and Propecia® (Finasteride). These are the two FDA-approved drugs to treat hair loss.

Minoxidil, more commonly known as Rogaine®, this is a topical treatment placed directly on the scalp. It is a hair growth stimulator that has been proven to slow and even stop hereditary hair loss. It works best on hair loss at the crown of the head as opposed to that around the temples and hairline. Originally a prescription treatment, minoxidil is now available without a prescription and is recommended to men and women.

Propecia®. Propecia® (finasteride) is an oral medication available only with a prescription that is an FDA-approved drug to treat male pattern baldness. It does this by preventing testosterone from turning into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone responsible for causing male pattern baldness. This allows hair follicles to regrow hair. Propecia® is the most effective prescription treatment to slow hair loss and boost regrowth. This treatment requires medication to be taken daily for at least a year to determine its effectiveness. This oral treatment is only available to men as it can negatively affect women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It also has been shown to have no effect on hair loss and regrowth on post-menopausal women.

What Are The Costs?

In terms of cost for topicals and prescriptions, the therapies vary with each patient. During initial consultations, Dr. Giordano reviews the costs as well as payment options including cash, credit cards, and checks. He may also discuss financing options through CareCredit®.

How Do I Know if Topicals and Prescriptions are Right for Me?

If you have noticed excessive shedding or light to moderate hair loss, this may be right for you. We recommend you schedule a consultation with Dr. Giordano for an evaluation of your hair loss and options to help slow the progression and begin to regrow hair.
