Want to learn habits of healthy skin?

Habits of healthy skin rely on basics:
Cleanser:
WASH YOUR FACE!! Morning AND Night.  Choose a cleanser that is gentle, PH neutral, a non fragrance non soap cleanser!  I recommend PCA Creamy Cleanser.  Keep it simple!Habits of healthy skin

Exfoliate: We shed millions of skin cells daily. This is why it’s so important to slough them away by exfoliating.  Keep it mild! No scrubs that contain rough grit.  Instead, purchase glycolic pads.  Clean out your pores without causing damage to pore size and scarring. Two to three times a week is all you need.

Moisturize:  Fragrance free!! Also, skip the heavy cream based product and go with something light like PCA Rebalance.  Perfect for all skin types. And if you’re one of the many that omits moisturizer due to an overproduction of sebum… your skin may be producing more, exacerbating the problem.

Retinol: A form of vitamin A and produced by our bodies.  Retinol is used to synthesize collagen production and reduces its breakdown.  Because we stop producing collagen and elastin in our mid thirties it’s imperative to start using retinol in our 20’s.  We have branded our own retinol her at Carolina Age Management and you will be hard pressed to beat our price point!

Water: Up to 60% of the human adult body is good ol H2O!  According to HH mitchell, Journal Of Biological Chemistry 158, the skin contains 64%.  Water is one of your body’s most basic needs.  Our cells, blood, and all of the tissues in between. Hydration helps us digestion run smoothly, helps us fight off infection, internally and externally.  So, it would make sense to hydrate for glowing, healthy skin.  8 glasses a day is what has always been recommended but water comes in many forms. Don’t force down pitchers of water, but simply follow your thirst meter and up your water rich foods i.e. cucumbers, tomatoes, watermelon, zucchini for optimal wellness.

Cover up!!! SPF is SO cool!  90% of signs of aging come from chronic unprotected sun exposure.  And Melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer, has risen some 800% in the past 40 years among woman aged 18-39 which can credited by more frequent tanning.  I tell patients to apply a zinc based SPF, like EltaMD elements everyday head to toe and even in the winter months.

Sleep: Catch some ZZZZZ’s!  Maximizing sleep and exercise and reducing stress are all essential links to healthy skin.  Stress increases Cortisol, a hormone held responsible for acne prone skin.  Sleep deprivation is linked to increased signs of aging as well as a reduced ability of skin to recover.  Sleep more and minimize stress when possible.
