What are Dermal Fillers and Facial Fillers?

Dermal fillers, also known as facial fillers, are non-surgical cosmetic treatments that are minimally invasive and an excellent alternative to invasive procedures such as the facelift

Facial fillers and injectables are gel-like liquids that are injected deep into the skin to help restore smooth lines, soften creases, and enhance your facial contour. Injectable dermal fillers also restore lost volume. Annually over one million people go through this skin rejuvenating treatment, all with the goal of looking and feeling more youthful.

What are Facial Fillers Made Of?

Fillers and injectables are of various types and are categorized by the contents of each substance.

Injectable dermal fillers that use Hyaluronic Acid (HA) help hydrate the skin and make it plump. HA fillers are gel-like and the results last for six to twelve months.

Another type of injectable facial filler is calcium hydroxyapatite which is a naturally occurring substance found in our bones. The CAHA filler is thicker than the hyaluronic acid filler, it is also more consistent and long-lasting. Calcium hydroxyapatite fillers help stimulate collagen production in the body and last for up to twelve months.

Injectable fillers also use the Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) filler for treatment. PMMA is a synthetic substance that takes the form of a microsphere and remains in the skin for a long time.

How Do Dermal Fillers Improve Your Facial Appearance?

Injectable facial fillers can be used to smooth out the lines around the nose and mouth. They can enhance and restore sagging cheeks or temples. They also diminish vertical lip lines, smooth creases on the chin, and plump and enhance the lips. Facial fillers can even be used to restore facial symmetry, and to fill in hollow areas such as the tear troughs. There are countless ways in which facial fillers can improve your appearance, and a free first-time consultation with your provider will help clarify some of these uses.

The Benefits of Dermal Fillers and Injectables

There are a number of reasons why facial fillers are a popular treatment option:

Quick and visible results

The Botox effect takes place in less than a week, Juvéderm effects are right away. Kybella offers relatively rapid results and differences are usually visible after either one or two sessions.

Youthful skin look

With aging comes wrinkles, sagging, etc.… which leaves many patients unhappy with their appearance. Fillers offer younger-looking skin without surgery. Get back that youthful look in a non-invasive way.

There’s no downtime

There’s no recovery time needed after you get fillers. Most patients resume their normal routine right away.

The treatment is quick

Dermal and facial fillers can be done in minutes. You can even book an appointment on your lunch break, have your injection, and go back to work if you want to.

Dermal filler aren’t painful

Most filler patients say that they are pain-free, or cause only mild temporary discomfort at most. Fillers are painless due to the thinnest of needles used to precisely deliver the product.

What Areas Can I Treat with Dermal Fillers?

There are several ways in which facial fillers can be applied to achieve a natural, youthful appearance. Here are some of the most common examples:

Lip Filler

With age, the lips can lose some of their volume. Getting a lip filler at one of CAMI’s North Carolina locations will help plump up those lips, bringing new shape and definition.

Tear Trough Filler or Undereye Filler

The tear troughs are the areas under the eyes, just above the cheeks. With time, they can take on a hollowed appearance, leading to a premature sense of aging. For a smoother appearance, consider a tear trough filler at our Huntersville location outside Charlotte, or our Greensboro location.

Liquid Nose Job

Fillers can also be used to provide non-surgical rhinoplasty, altering the space and contours of the nose for a more balanced, proportional look.

Jawline Filler

There are a number of fillers that work well along the jawline, replacing jowling or sagging skin with a sharper, more defined contour.

Cheek Filler

A cheek filler can restore lost volume to “sunken” cheeks,” producing a more robust, natural, and healthy appearance.

Liquid Facelift

For patients who wish to have tighter, smoother skin but who are not ready for a surgical facelift, dermal fillers can be used for a liquid facelift.

Options for Dermal Fillers and Injectables

As we age, fine lines and wrinkles are some of the first signs that we may not be as youthful as we would like to appear. Although it can be frustrating to see, the good news is that there are several facial fillers available to help you look and feel your best from the inside out. At Carolina Age Management Institute, we are proud to offer our patients exactly what they need to continue looking and feeling vibrant. Our offerings include:

Botox®

Trusted for years as an effective and reliable filler, Botox® has a reputation that precedes it. Especially effective at targeting frown lines, crow’s feet, and deep lines between the eyebrows, this injection can also be used to treat medical concerns such as migraines, excessive sweating, and TMJ.

Dysport®

If you have moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows, Dysport® may be able to help. This injection targets only the problem area, so that the rest of your face maintains a natural look.

JUVÉDERM®

This is a dermal filler that helps replace lost facial volume, restoring a younger, smoother complexion. It’s made with hyaluronic acid, a substance found in the skin that gives it volume and elasticity. When injected into facial wrinkles, it erases them to provide a natural, radiant look.

Kybella®

Kybella® is an exciting product that helps to remedy a “double chin.” If you are concerned about fat deposits under your chin or near your jawline, you will be happy to know that Kybella® is the only injectable approved by the FDA to treat this issue. An injection of Kybella® works to break up the fat in the area for a well-defined jawline and longer, leaner neck.

Restylane®

Ideal for plumping the face and reducing the appearance of moderate to severe wrinkles, Restylane® creates natural-looking results in the cheeks, lips, and other areas of the face. Our office offers Restylane® Lyft, Restylane® Silk and Restylane® Refyne and Defyne for your convenience.

Sculptura ®

This facial injectable is typically used to diminish lines and wrinkles caused by aging or by prolonged sun exposure. This treatment can also be used to treat fat loss in the face from diseases like HIV.

Vollure™

Containing hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance, Vollure™ is specifically designed to diminish wrinkles in the lower half of the face. Laugh lines, nasal labial folds, marionette lines, and oral commissures can all be addressed with Vollure™.

JUVÉDERM Voluma®

To combat the loss of volume in the face, Voluma® can help. This filler has a lightweight formula with larger particles that easily pass through the skin, binding to the tissue underneath.

What Should I Know Before Getting Facial Fillers and Injectables?

Preparation

The preparation involved is easy and only involves cleaning the area(s) where the injections are made.

A clinician may take pictures prior to the treatments to use as a comparison. While there is little to no discomfort during the treatment, a numbing cream may be applied if necessary prior to the injection.

Recovery

There is no “recovery” per se. Most patients return to their daily routine immediately following their treatments. Any redness or slight swelling at the injection site typically resolves itself within 24 hours.

Cost

Cost depends on the type of filler or injectable used, how many injections are required, and whether treatments are combined with other medical spa services.

We accept cash, checks, and major credit cards. We also offer financing with CareCredit®.

Dermal Fillers Charlotte NC FAQ’s

What are dermal fillers, facial fillers and injectables?
Fillers and injectables are a type of cosmetic treatment. This treatment is minimally invasive and involves treating targeted areas by injecting some type of solution to solve a problem. There are many types of fillers and injectables, but at Carolina Age Management Institute (CAMI) we most commonly use Botox, Juvéderm, and Kybella.
How do facial fillers and injectables work?
The way fillers and injectables work depends on the type being used and what it is being used to treat. Most, however, involves injecting a solution into a targeted area to improve its appearance. For example, Botox works by being injected into an area with wrinkles. This solution freezes the muscle so they cannot furrow. Your provider will be able to give you details on how what they are using for you works, before your treatment.
Do I need to do anything to prepare for my injectables treatment?
Luckily, there isn’t a whole lot you need to do to prepare for. The prep work will be done in the office. Before treatment, a clinician will clean the area that is being treated, take photos, and may even apply a numbing cream to keep you as comfortable as possible.
What does dermal fillers and injectables aftercare entail?
Following your treatment, you need to make sure you take care of the area and your skin. Though you may experience slight redness afterward, you can return to your normal skincare routine almost right after. Your provider can recommend products to help keep your skin in top shape between treatments.
How long do facial fillers and dermal fillers last?
That depends on the area being treated and the type of injectable being used. On average, this can last anywhere from three to six months. If you have questions about how long you can expect your treatment to last, ask before your treatment.
